Start with what somebody needs, and the design has somewhere to go.

Tim Dart, Senior Creative at Fuel Integrated

Tim is a Senior Creative at Fuel, which in practice means he’s trusted with the work that matters most. Brand, social, digital, interactive documents, high-impact presentations, the format changes constantly and he’s fluent across all of it. He’s as comfortable delivering at speed and scale as he is spending a careful afternoon on a single high profile piece of artwork, and he applies the same standard to both, because a small job going out is somebody’s first impression of a brand just as much as the big one. Clients tend to notice within a project or two that the work coming back is better than the brief they sent.

Ideation, art working, image manipulation, the craft runs right through the process rather than sitting at one end of it. He’s as valuable in the room where an idea is still forming as he is at the point where it has to become something real that works, at the right size, in the right format, everywhere it needs to live. Plenty of people can have the idea and plenty can execute, and the ones who can do both make better decisions early, because they already know what the thing will have to stand up to later. It’s the reason the difficult jobs find their way to him.

Design is thinking made visual. Saul Bass said it, and it’s the line I keep coming back to, because it’s a reminder that the picture isn’t the point. The thinking is.

Experience & Expertise.

He knows brand guidelines properly, follows them rigorously, and understands why they exist. A brand only works when it’s applied consistently by people who have never met each other, and Tim treats that consistency as part of the craft rather than a constraint on it. It also means that when he says a piece could be braver, people listen, because he’s earned the right to say it and he can explain why in terms a client will recognise — he’s a brand ambassador and creative advocate at once.

What holds it together is a clear sense of who the work is actually for. Every job starts with a person who needs to understand something, be persuaded of something, or get something done, and the design exists to serve that. He’s at his best when a solution turns out to be simpler than everyone expected, when the thinking has been done properly and the answer looks obvious in hindsight. Those are the pieces that get used, get shared, and get remembered, which is the measure of success that counts for Tim.
